Essay 6

During this semester we've observed various films that might of change our lives and posibaly direct us into different paths, films such as The Matrix, The Truman Show, and Sleep Dealer are examples of how we connect to the "real world" and give us a glimpse on how these characters went about with difficult decisions they had to face. All of these films have a connection with each other.

I see a lot of connections with these films all of them have a theme where characters are not satisfy with their world and they seek other options, in the case of the Matrix movie Neo is a regular civilain working as a business man with software, he also has a side job in witch in our society is consider ilegal, hes a computer hacker. Later on he finds out that a program has hacked into his computer called the "Matrix", eager to find out what this is all about he begins to explore. In the Truman Show, we have a character by the name of truman a man taken away from the real world from birth and brought to a secluded island where he was raised and he was taught to believe everything was good and perfect in that world. In the Sleep Dealer we have a young mexican guy who is desperate to help out his family and make some changes, he wants to see more and go to places he has never been to, so he builds this radio that made him listen to the world and hear what was going on through this device he built.

These tree films are very good at demenstarting themes and connections but the two films that really emphasise these illustration are The Matrix and Sleep Dealer, in the Matrix Neo discovers that there is another world out there, The Matrix and he chooses to leave his world to live the matrix where he will quickly learns hes the choosen one but all of this comes with a price where he will soon realize that he needs to be plugged in order to enter the matrix. In Sleep Dealer Memo is very hurt to what happen to his father he moves out to the city where he gets a job where he uses NODS to connect to different places, he also needs to be plugged in to go into another world.

In the matrix Neo learns that while being plugged in doesn't mean he is 100% safe from danger, he's been told that even though hes connected his mind is still in function, if he gets hurt in the matrix or is being hit by anyone blood will come out from where he is connected, also if he is killed in the matrix, hes a goner or also if someone intents to unplugged him he can also die, in Sleep Dealer Memo is working hard to support his family back in the village, he feels he can't stop working every time hes plugged in he is a machine working construction with other machines, he has wires in his arms back and neck, the effects on being plugged so long is that it drains out much energy from the body.

Sleep Dealer is a very creative movie it gives the audience a chance to see what it is to live a life so tough, especially in Mexico where the Rural life and the urban life are very different, many people leave their families to go work in the city and get a jobs so they can afford to maintain their families back home, much of the Latino culture, not all but most leave thier love ones behind so their family back home can have a better life, so they sacrafice for thier families, this film gives us a reality check on our behavior towards others and life itself sometimes people have to do extreme stuff such a memo did in Sleep dealer. In conclusion all of these films The Matrix, The Truman Show and Sleep dealer find their way to disconnect themselves.

The trip to the Museum of the moving image was a great way to interact with others and show common interests that we as a class might have, this was a great idea by professor Smith, it gave us a little breather from our classes it was a day to enjoy and learn about the cool stuff the museum had to offer. In my part i really enjoyed it especially the part where we all went to the room and got to say scripts from actors and then listen to your own voice on it, that was really cool to experiance. Regarding on the time we went to the Museum, i think it was a perfect timing, and this was very useful for this cluster giving the fact that we've been focused on the " Living in the Matrix" and the book "Me ++" gives a connection to the class. I was amazed by the way things used to be in the past, like tv's and cameras and such, they used to be very classy looking and very big i should add, like the tv's used to have a mirror for reflection for people can view tv i found that very interesting and gave me a sence of how much we've over come the past and how technology has improved over the years, and it still continues to improve at a rapid pace in today's world. In conclusion this was a good idead by Professor Smith to take this trip to the museum of the moving image, it was a great day and i gain a lot of knowledge with this visit, i hope you continue to do these kinds of activites they're very fun and interesting.

Thanks Dr. C jason Smith

During this semester i think i've improved on my writing skills i know i still have a lot to work on and make myself better, but its a process that will come in time. A lot of writers have issues starting up a paper like myself i usually get stuck in the introduction, i've noticed that everytime i write a paper i have that problem but once i come across the body, im in cruz control. Also writers need to be aware of plagiarism and not to take out sources and write them on their paper and get credit for someone elses work. But i havebnt come across that thought and im sure i wouldn't think about it, the consenquences are not good.Im sure i will overcome my obsticales as a writer and improve myself to be a better one.

I've learn a lot these past weeks while working on my Mid-term paper and using , MLA format, and also using power point. It was a process that required time and dedication, one has to be careful not to plagiarise which can lead to a failor to your paper and also get in truoble for doing so. i really enjoyed doing this project because of the fact that i did research on john F. Kennedy, he's my favorite president of all time, so that's why i was really pleased to do a paper based on him. I couldn't of done an outstanding job on it with out the help of professor Jason Smith, he went through the process of MLA format how to use the format, he also went trough power point which helped the whole class and made our presentations look outstanding, now i feel like i can use power point confidently and do things i never used to be able to do.

Last week the class viewd a movie called "The Truman show", basically what this movie was illustrating events on a characters life from day and night, to make more sence since he was born. He was adopted by a guy who was the owner of a tv show, and he choose truman to be his main star. Of course truman didn't know what was right from wrong because he never stepped out of the island, multipile incidents made him think that remaning in the island would be safe, then again they wouldn't want their man star to find his way to the real world, because if he did there wouldn't be more rattings and their show would be a total fiasco with out him. In the end truman started to find the truth about their world and began to explore until he realized he was being used for a television show. Truamn started to navigate away from their world in a storm where it almost cost his life, he found a door and what he saw was the real world if he crossed over, and he did to live the life where he had been missing for most of his life.

Do you think your life is determined by a special, individual fate, or are you free to choose as you wish?

What is fate ? Fate is the will or principle or determining cause by which things in general are believed to come to be as they are or events to happen as they do destiny, you can make your life easy or hard its all up to the person itself, although many people believe everything happens for a reason. The freedom enjoyed by those in the real world, however, may be just as illusory. You are free to perform an action only if you can avoid performing it. If you have to do something if its not in your power to do otherwise then you are not free to do it.If someone is forcing you to do something against your will or preveting you from doing something you want to do, you are not free. This sense of freedom is often referred to as "negative freedom". Cypher was sick and tired of the matrix "you call this free" cypher asks Trinity. " All i do is what he tells me to do. If i have to choose between that and the Matrix, I would choose the Matrix" by plugging cypher to the Matrix will that make him a free person ? Many would say "NO" because in the Matrix, Cypher still would not be calling the shots. He would lack what is known as "Positive freedom" because he would not have the power to do anything. According to Philosper Immamnuel Kant said that " life is not the kind of experiences you;ve had, but the kind of choices you've made. If you;ve always tried to do the right thing, then your are a good person even if things did not turn out the right way you planned"...Its up to you to make your own fate and lead a good path of life.

Gracia and Sanford us the terms "source" and "ontological status" to make distinctions that allow them to claim that the world in the Matrix is "unreal" and the world outside of the Matrix (outside of the program) is the "real world". What they heck do they mean by "source" and "ontological status"?

In the book The Matrix and Phillosphy it explains that the real and the unreal worlds have different causes. The second way to distinguish between the categories of real and unreal has to do with their respective ontological status put plainly, the way things exist. The meaning of Ontological is the argument of the existence of God holding that the existence of the concept of God entails the existance of God. The matrix is not something you have to believe in its created, on page 61 it states " The Matrix is a very complex computer program made by artifically intellegent machines".

In the book "The Matrix and Philosophy" by William Irwin, states various perspectives about life, whether life is an illusion or real or not real ? these are questions that are asked frequently. In scene 1 "Computers, Caves and Oracles: Neo and Socrates" talks about a world that people are slaves and they don't even know they are slaves due to the fact that's the only world they know, so for them it's normal. Like the Matrix that's a world Neo hasn't been expose to yet and he needs to see the light in order to believe. Morpheus tells Neo he was "born into a prison of his mind" meaning it's up to Neo to realize that hes the one who can control from what is real or not, theres a quote by Robert Frost's "I took the one less traveled by/ And that has made all the difference" this is exactly what Neo did he took the road less traveled by and lead him to a world where no one was aware of or that he himself couldn't believe in it until he made the choice to "believe", Neo was given the choice to walk away from it all in the beginning but he chose not to.
Many people choose to believe in things they don't even know, because society enforces them to believe in such thing, Morpheus states "What is real ? How do you define real ? If you're talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain", so through out this we see stuggles between charecters trying to define what is real or if its worth living, the only one with the "real" answer is you.

In response to the Matrix they're a lot of elements that can be discuss regarding Neo and Socrates. In the matrix Neo is believed to be the chosen one, the one who can save people and bring a sense of peace to a chaotic world they called the "Matrix", Morpheus who is to be the God of the matrix tries to show Neo the right path, but in the purpose of this search he doesn't believe hes the chosen one just like Socrates said, both of these characters are in search for answers but at the same time they doubt themselves. They both reach out to the Oracle for answers, Socrates believes that hes not the smartest person in the world, while Neo believes hes not the chosen one to save the world. The book "Matrix and philosophy" on page 7 gives an example where the oracle speaks, "He asked if there was anyone wiser than me, and the priestess of Apollo replied that there was no one wiser", this illustrates that both Socrates and Neo were told that they really were the ones. We can also relate to Jesus and Neo going through the same process, Jesus in on hand was chosen by God to save the world, he had followers and he was put through temptation many times but Jesus was able to over come obstacles and full fill his quest to save the world, as for Neo he was giving a chance by the agents for him to work with them, but he refuse to do so. Jesus was betrayed by Judas just like Neo was betrayed by cypher, very similar outcomes, in the end they both obtain the strength to fight evil and prevail. Also in the Allegory of the cave, they're prisoners that are chained against a wall and all the see are shadows that pass behind them, through their eyes that's the only world they know once being expose to the world this prisoner begins to explore it but comes back amaized to tell his freinds but they don't recognize his voice and even worse they cant see him, only through a shadow. The Matrix and the Allegory of the cave are two worlds that people aren't yet expose or are not ready to be so.

I imagine myself living in the Socrotes cave, im still chained up and its very warm due to the fires that are behind me, i don't know what lies before me. There are shadows that i see behind the walls, although i was told those shadows were "real", without me knowing really if they are if i havent seen them. but since i haven't been exposed to such things i woudn't knwo what to expect, i was giving the opportunity to leave the cave and see the outside world, so i proceed with my quest and leave the cave, i discover that theres a sun above me a source of energy. I know where i am and what season of the month it is all through just observing the sun and understand that it is real and im able to see it with my own eyes. So im thankful that i was relased and was able to visualize for myself and understand nature further. I know that i was there and just being stuck in the darkness where i was kept for so long, made me think there was nothing else but darkness. The truth is out there, sometimes it takes courage to go out and see it for yourself
