Essay 6

During this semester we've observed various films that might of change our lives and posibaly direct us into different paths, films such as The Matrix, The Truman Show, and Sleep Dealer are examples of how we connect to the "real world" and give us a glimpse on how these characters went about with difficult decisions they had to face. All of these films have a connection with each other.

I see a lot of connections with these films all of them have a theme where characters are not satisfy with their world and they seek other options, in the case of the Matrix movie Neo is a regular civilain working as a business man with software, he also has a side job in witch in our society is consider ilegal, hes a computer hacker. Later on he finds out that a program has hacked into his computer called the "Matrix", eager to find out what this is all about he begins to explore. In the Truman Show, we have a character by the name of truman a man taken away from the real world from birth and brought to a secluded island where he was raised and he was taught to believe everything was good and perfect in that world. In the Sleep Dealer we have a young mexican guy who is desperate to help out his family and make some changes, he wants to see more and go to places he has never been to, so he builds this radio that made him listen to the world and hear what was going on through this device he built.

These tree films are very good at demenstarting themes and connections but the two films that really emphasise these illustration are The Matrix and Sleep Dealer, in the Matrix Neo discovers that there is another world out there, The Matrix and he chooses to leave his world to live the matrix where he will quickly learns hes the choosen one but all of this comes with a price where he will soon realize that he needs to be plugged in order to enter the matrix. In Sleep Dealer Memo is very hurt to what happen to his father he moves out to the city where he gets a job where he uses NODS to connect to different places, he also needs to be plugged in to go into another world.

In the matrix Neo learns that while being plugged in doesn't mean he is 100% safe from danger, he's been told that even though hes connected his mind is still in function, if he gets hurt in the matrix or is being hit by anyone blood will come out from where he is connected, also if he is killed in the matrix, hes a goner or also if someone intents to unplugged him he can also die, in Sleep Dealer Memo is working hard to support his family back in the village, he feels he can't stop working every time hes plugged in he is a machine working construction with other machines, he has wires in his arms back and neck, the effects on being plugged so long is that it drains out much energy from the body.

Sleep Dealer is a very creative movie it gives the audience a chance to see what it is to live a life so tough, especially in Mexico where the Rural life and the urban life are very different, many people leave their families to go work in the city and get a jobs so they can afford to maintain their families back home, much of the Latino culture, not all but most leave thier love ones behind so their family back home can have a better life, so they sacrafice for thier families, this film gives us a reality check on our behavior towards others and life itself sometimes people have to do extreme stuff such a memo did in Sleep dealer. In conclusion all of these films The Matrix, The Truman Show and Sleep dealer find their way to disconnect themselves.

The trip to the Museum of the moving image was a great way to interact with others and show common interests that we as a class might have, this was a great idea by professor Smith, it gave us a little breather from our classes it was a day to enjoy and learn about the cool stuff the museum had to offer. In my part i really enjoyed it especially the part where we all went to the room and got to say scripts from actors and then listen to your own voice on it, that was really cool to experiance. Regarding on the time we went to the Museum, i think it was a perfect timing, and this was very useful for this cluster giving the fact that we've been focused on the " Living in the Matrix" and the book "Me ++" gives a connection to the class. I was amazed by the way things used to be in the past, like tv's and cameras and such, they used to be very classy looking and very big i should add, like the tv's used to have a mirror for reflection for people can view tv i found that very interesting and gave me a sence of how much we've over come the past and how technology has improved over the years, and it still continues to improve at a rapid pace in today's world. In conclusion this was a good idead by Professor Smith to take this trip to the museum of the moving image, it was a great day and i gain a lot of knowledge with this visit, i hope you continue to do these kinds of activites they're very fun and interesting.
